We are looking to recruit for the above position in our Exeter branch. The ideal candidate will have a strong sales background with a broad product knowledge and previous experience of the Merchant industry. The applicant must be self-motivated with an awareness of the local area as you will be expected to generate new business and increase sales. High customer service levels are essential, as is a flexible and enthusiastic attitude.
Serve customers politely and efficiently to ensure customer satisfaction
Manage your telephone communication professionally. Return missed calls promptly and utilise voice mail facility appropriately
Provide customers with advice and guidance on the selection and use of products and support colleagues in your areas of expertise
Maximise sales using linked selling and other appropriate skills
Manage, monitor and effectively use customer special terms
When on site be prepared to offer prices to secure the order at the maximum profitability to the Company, always mindful of the overheads involved in fulfilling that order. Ensure branch is advised of any relevant pricing activity, so that a record may be kept
When appropriate forward sufficient information to your branch contact to ensure a proper quotation may be raised
With the support of internal sales staff ensure all enquiries and quotations are priced quickly and efficiently using market and system information to gain orders at maximum margin for the company. All enquires should be returned within three working days
When undertaking site surveys to satisfy customer requirements, ensure customers acknowledge details of goods prior to placing order (eg kitchen and bathroom planning, joinery survey, truss measurement etc)
Service customer orders from branch stock profile where ever possible and appropriate.
Ensure all customer special orders and directs are placed with preferred suppliers (in accordance with Company policy) having negotiated the best possible price and using the correct documentation
Encourage your sales office contact to liaise with customer and internal department/supplier to ensure delivery requirements are met. Customers must be informed of any delays or problems in meeting those requirements
Monitor customer special orders to ensure prompt delivery/collection. Cancelled or incorrect orders should be returned promptly to supplier. All rehandling charges must be considered and commercial decisions made
Ensure that any goods that customers request a credit/refund for are in a saleable condition before appropriate paperwork is raised
Deal with any customer complaints quickly and properly, seeking guidance from Management where needed or appropriate
Keep Branch management informed of any supply difficulties and customer dissatisfaction
Manage customer credit limits and payments. Liaise with Branch Management as necessary to maximise sales potential and minimise financial risk
Maintain appropriate customer records to enable you to manage accounts to fulfil their maximum potential
Prospect for new business in order to achieve customer base growth, in line with target set by management
Maintain an up to date knowledge of products technology and regulations in order to support or further customer service
Maintain a relevant library of manufacturers literature and price lists
Be aware of competitor and customers’ activities to identify commercial threats and sales opportunities
Follow the Company procedure in the handling of all monies and selection of payment types
When covering other departments ensure correct procedures are followed
The Hours
42.5 hours per week – Monday to Friday with weekend availability
Specific Experience & Skills Required
Clean driving licence
Experience in a merchanting sales environment
Technical ability to take–off quantities from plans
